Aufruf in Los Angeles

Mazal tov! An aufruf and Shabbat Chattan at Bait Aaron

Before the wedding or right after it, the chattan is called up to the Torah and the whole kehilla sings with him. Couples celebrate their Shabbat Chattan at our 9:30am JFK Minyan, with a Kiddush in their honor, at 3rd and La Peer near Beverly Hills.

The Shabbat

How an aufruf works

The chattan’s aliyah is one of the happiest moments in shul. It takes only a few minutes, and the joy carries straight into Kiddush.

  • Choose the ShabbatAshkenazi families hold the aufruf on the Shabbat before the wedding. Many Sephardic families celebrate the Shabbat Chattan on the Shabbat after the wedding, in the week of Sheva Brachot. Some do both.
  • DaveningThe chattan, his family and friends daven with the kehilla at the 9:30am JFK Minyan.
  • The aliyahThe chattan is called up to the Torah, and a Mi Sheberach is said for him and his kallah.
  • Mazal tovThe kehilla sings and wishes the couple mazal tov. In many Ashkenazi shuls, guests toss soft candies, a sweet wish for a sweet life together.
  • KiddushAfter davening, everyone celebrates together at Kiddush.
