Choosing

Oil or candles?

Olive oil

Olive oil is the most beautiful way to do the mitzvah, because the miracle was with olive oil. Pre-filled oil cups make it easy and clean.

Candles

Wax or paraffin candles are also fine. The standard boxed candles burn about 30 minutes, so light them after nightfall. On Friday, use longer candles or oil.

The menorah

Choose one with eight lights in a straight row, all at the same height, and a separate place for the shamash. Count: you need 44 candles for all eight nights.

Not sure which to buy? Ask at the store, or see how to light the menorah.
